WHAT'S NEW

Hoan Bridge Advocacy

I have strongly urged Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Frank Busalacchi to continue maintaining the Dan Hoan Bridge instead of considering proposals to demolish it and replace it with lift bridges over the rivers.

Stopping traffic on I-794 to allow boat traffic to pass back and forth along the river when the current road already avoids such a roadblock is incomprehensible.

The southeast side of Milwaukee County has not received its fair share of transit revenue, but we its citizens continue to pay for expansion of roads elsewhere. The responsibility of the DOT is to maintain what our communities waited over 20 years to build. We waited another 20 years to obtain the linkage provided by I-794.

Recognizing Superb Park Service

On Labor Day, I joined the South Milwaukee Veterans Council in recognizing Tom Sudol, a dedicated Parks employee and volunteer who supervises landscaping at South Milwaukee’s War Memorial on Chicago Avenue. Tom also tends perennials at Grant Park Beach and installations at the Kelly Senior Center, works with Parks Friends groups, and participates in Weed-Outs to protect plant diversity. At the War Memorial, Tom has nurtured a place to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who fought in war.

I commend workers and volunteers like Tom.  Their tireless efforts have preserved beauty in our parks despite deep budget cuts that have left resources spread thin.

Milwaukee County to Provide IT Services to Cudahy

Cudahy Mayor Ryan McCue facilitated and signed a contract with Milwaukee County for Information Technology services. Cudahy will be able to access the County’s expertise in managing programs and projects under the pilot program.

This is just one example of how Milwaukee County can provide services that benefit taxpayers through a mutually beneficial agreement. There are many other areas where Milwaukee County has the potential to work on behalf of taxpayers to prevent inefficient duplication of services. We will be looking at additional opportunities like this in the days to come.

Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Demonstration

Learn about this life-saving device that helps a heart return to normal functioning in the event of cardiac arrest. Boy Scout Johnny Bukowski has prepared this workshop with Divine Mercy Scout Troop 235 & South Milwaukee Fire Fighters. Join them at Divine Mercy (1800 16th Av., South Milwaukee) on Thursday, September 11, between 6-8 pm for a half-hour session. Kudos to scouts like Johnny who make a difference in our community!

Sunset Beach Walk

Friends of Mill Pond & Oak Creek Watercourse invite you to meet at Grant Park Beach on Saturday, September 13, at 5 pm. Come learn about Grant history, partake in an illuminated beach walk, and enjoy hot chili, dogs, and cider for purchase! Proceeds benefit the restoration of the South Milwaukee Mill Pond and area.
